Need can be used in the following ways: need 有以下用法
as a transitive verb (followed by a noun or pronoun object): 用作及物动词（后接名词或代词作宾语）: I need a drink. 我需要一杯饮料。 Do you need anything? 您需要什么吗？ (followed by an infinitive with ‘to'): 后接带to的动词不定式: She needs to rest. 她需要休息。 You don't need to worry. 你不必担心。 (followed by ‘to' without a following infinitive): 后接to,省略动词不定式: You can stay longer if you need to. 如果需要的话你，可以多呆一段时间。
as a modal verb (usually followed by an infinitive without ‘to'): 用作情态动词（通常后接不带to的动词不定式）: This is the only thing you need do. 这是你唯一你需要做的事。
The modal verb need is mainly used in questions and negatives, which are formed without ‘do': 情态动词need 主要用于不带do 的疑问句和否定句中: Need I pay now? 我需要现在付款吗？ You need not worry. 你不必担心。 In American English, except for a few phrases such as ‘need I say more?', the modal verb is used only in formal language and some journalism. 在美国英语中，情态动词need 除了例如need I say more?等少数用法外，通常只用在正式语体和一些新闻语体中。
The negative need not is often shortened to needn't in conversation and informal writing. The modal verb need does not change its form, so the third person singular of the present tense does not end in ‘-s': 否定形式need not 在会话和非正式文体中常缩略为needn’t。 情态动词need 没有形式变化，因此其现在时的第三人称单数形式不加 -s: He need not take the exam. 他不必参加考试。
The ordinary transitive verb need has a regular past tense needed: 普通及物动词need 有规则过去式needed: They needed to be careful. 他们得小心谨慎些。
The modal verb need has no past tense, but it can be used in the pattern need not have/needn't have followed by a past participle, to show that although someone did something, it was not necessary: 情态动词need 没有过去式，但可用于need not have/needn’t have 中，后接过去分词，表示其实不需要做某事之意: You needn't have waited for me. 你本不需要等我的。
The ordinary transitive verb has a future tense will need: 普通及物动词need 有将来时形式will need: You will need to show your passport. 你将需要出示你的护照。
In many cases, especially in questions and negatives using the simple present tense followed by an infinitive, there are two possible patterns: 在许多情况下，尤其是在使用一般现在时后接动词不定式的疑问句和否定句中，有两种表达方式: Need I come with you? = Do I need to come with you? 需要我和你一起来吗？ He needn't come. = He doesn't need to come. 他不需要来。
