The negative use of the term snowflake to refer to someone who is too sensitive and too easily offended has been ascribed to the American writer Chuck Palahniuk. His 1996 novel Fight Club, as well as the film based on it, contains the line: 'You are not special. You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake.'
